Split or multi-split: which to choose?
A split cools one room with its own outdoor unit; a multi-split connects several indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Here is what to weigh up.
How each one works
- 1x1 split: one indoor unit and one outdoor unit. Each room is independent.
- Multi-split 2x1, 3x1…: several indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit.

When a split suits you
- When you want to cool a single room, or two rooms far apart.
- If you prefer each room to be fully independent.
- When there is room on the façade or terrace for several outdoor units.
- If you want to add rooms gradually: each split works on its own.
When a multi-split suits you
- If there is little space on the façade or terrace, or the building limits outdoor units.
- To air-condition several rooms with just one unit visible outside.
- When you prefer a single outdoor unit to maintain.
- If you also want to add hot water to the same system.

What to keep in mind with a multi-split
- If the outdoor unit fails, the whole home is left without service.
- The indoor units share the capacity of the outdoor unit, so the sizes must be worked out carefully.
- The distance between the outdoor unit and each indoor unit has limits.
- It is not always cheaper than several splits: it depends on each case.
Our advice
Before deciding, we look at the home: rooms, use and available space. We recommend the option that fits you best, whether split or multi-split.
Frequently asked questions
How many indoor units can a multi-split take?
It depends on the model: in home systems, between two and four indoor units.
Can I combine wall units with cassette or ducted units?
In many systems, yes. It depends on the outdoor unit chosen, and we check it when preparing the quote.
Can I have cooling in one room and heating in another?
Each indoor unit is controlled separately, but in a standard multi-split they all run in the same mode at the same time: all cooling or all heating.
